Rock Revolutionary: Mapping the Complete Hendrix Experience 35

Jimi Hendrix changed music forever. At a time when the Vietnam War made the world question itself and society and culture was being transformed through the psychedelic and mind-expanding prism of the late 1960s, Hendrix provided the soundtrack of the generation. Calling all rock music ravers, pop culture lovers, collectors of memorabilia and those who are still hippies at heart, join us as and add your own legendary images we map the definitive and global Jimi Hendrix experience. Born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Jimi Hendrix first picked up a guitar at the age of 15. After an honourable discharge from the US Army in 1962, Hendrix found his calling in the rhythm and blues scene of Clarkesville, Tennessee, where he formed his first band, the King Kasuals, and it was there that one of the most iconic images in the history of rock music was created, as Hendrix famously learned to play guitar with his teeth. Hendrix's star continued its meteoric rise and in 1966 he found himself in London, rubbing shoulders with other soon-to-be-legendary artists including the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Cream. As frontman for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, he penned top ten hits with 'Purple Haze' in 1966 and 'Hey Joe' in 1967 and by the time of his legendary performance at Woodstock in 1969, Hendrix was the highest-paid music performer on the planet. Hendrix gave his final concert on September 6th, 1970, as the second incarnation of the Experience took the stage at the Open Air Love and Peace Festival in Fehmarn, Germany. Just 12 days later, he was found unresponsive at the Samarkand Hotel in London and was pronounced dead from an overdose of sleeping tablets at 12:45 p.m. Tie on your headbands and prepare to be well and truly rocked as we explore the life and legacy of, as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame puts it, "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."

Hendrix called his music “electric church” because he believed music was his religion. His belief is put into practice at Seattle’s Experience Music Project, where one room is simply called the Sky Church, a great hall inspired by Jimi’s concept of a place where people of all ages, interests and backgrounds could come together to experience music.
